Painting the Town Proud -
March 2022
with Martin Garza
Instead of asking this month’s Paint the Town Proud winner “What have you done?” It makes more sense to ask him what he hasn’t! Thousands of hours, hundreds of thankful community members and dozens of organizations. That’s the impact Martin Garza has had on Dripping Springs and surrounding areas of Austin. In fact, it’s difficult to find someone who doesn’t know Martin and his dedication to our town.
“Martin is really active in our community. He goes above and beyond to help people,” said friend and nominator, Debbe Purcell. “He’s always helping out the less fortunate, and even did so while raising two kids as a single dad!”
Now an “almost” empty nester and married to the love of his life, Charlene, Martin still finds plenty of time to volunteer and serve as a board member in organizations such as Project Connect, the Knights of Columbus, St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, Love thy Neighbor, DSHS PTSA, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission—all while working as a territory manager for American Water. He’s even a VIRTUAL volunteer serving as a moderator for several Facebook groups. In his “free” time, Martin plays and referees soccer and has recently taken up a hobby that might surprise many that know him.
“I am taking lessons and playing the piano,” said Martin. “And at my next concert, I’ll be performing a contemporary Christian piece with vocals.”
His Christian spirit and his giver’s heart come from his parents, according to Martin. “Giving back is a tribute to the mom I lost at nineteen. She was always involved with her kids and the community. I truly get pleasure from helping others and paying it forward, just like she did.”
Picking a favorite labor of love is hard for Martin, but when pressed—Tiger Santa tops the list. His face lights up when talking about the families who benefit from the program. “Aside from husband and father, it’s my favorite role.”
And it’s a role your mom would be proud of.
Martin Garza, thank you for painting our town PROUD!
